The materials included 1,000 bags of cement for vulnerable families to build new houses, 100 chairs and some sewing machines for women cooperatives, 180 school bags and about 150 footballs and basketballs for students.

Rwanda has made remarkable achievements in poverty alleviation, as a result of the unity, diligence, hard work and self-reliance of the Rwandan people, and most importantly, the adherence to a development path suitable for its national conditions, Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda Rao Hongwei said at a handover ceremony of the donation.

China-Rwanda relations are now at the best in history, and the Chinese government is providing more support to Rwanda in different areas such as infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, among others, said Rao, adding that the Chinese embassy will also join hands with the Rwandan people to participate in the economic and social development of local communities.

Providing decent accommodations for Rwandans is a priority of the Rwandan government, and the materials from the Chinese embassy will support the construction of houses for the most vulnerable Ubudehe families, thus completely changing the livelihood of the beneficiaries, said Fred Mufulukye, governor of Eastern Province.

Ubudehe is one of Rwanda's best-known home-grown solutions in poverty alleviation. Such locally-created solutions have been the bedrock for the reconstruction and transformation of Rwanda after the 1994 genocide.
