The case of a Chinese national surnamed Fan is currently under investigation in accordance with the law, the Chinese Mission to the European Union (EU) said in a statement on Sunday.

"Chinese citizen Fan was suspected of engaging in criminal activities endangering China's national security," the statement read, noting that "compulsory measures" have been taken by authorities in Beijing.

"Fan's rights and interests are fully protected," the statement added.

The statement didn't reveal the full name of the individual but it's believed to be in response to comments made by a spokesperson for the European External Action Service that a Chinese staff member at Bloomberg News bureau in Beijing has been detained by China's national security agency.
