Yao Tianyu, a male nurse in an intensive care unit in Dezhou in China’s Shandong Province, developed an illustrative system for use in the hospital where he works to facilitate the communication with patients, according to Thepaper.com.

Yao, who is in his late twenties, said he often encounters difficulties communicating with patients who often have impediments such as artificial airways. He told colleagues he’d developed the idea of a comic book he dubbed “Patient Needs Card” for just this purpose.

After spending three days to complete the graphics, Yao brought them to his patients, many of whom finding this mode of communication helpful and convenient. “They couldn't speak with the artificial airway. When they saw this comic, they smiled at me happily,” said Yao.

Yao said to Thepaper.com that he was genuinely interested in nursing work and had always wanted to be a nurse.

Yao said that at the beginning, the Patient Needs Card was only used in the convalescent room. With the affirmation of patient and colleagues, the department is now ready to use the card in other units as well.
