China’s top radar expert Liu Yongtan donated 8 million yuan ($1.1 million), the amount he won from the country’s supreme science award, to a university in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.

The donation ceremony was held on Monday at the Harbin Institute of Technology, which will be used to foster outstanding students in electronics engineering.

Liu, 83, also an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, received the Highest Science and Technology Award in 2019 for his contributions to China’s first high-frequency radar system.

“This honor is not just for me, but for my team and all patriotic scientists. When I received it, I decided to give the award money to the school I’m working for and to country’s scientific course,” Liu said.
