Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.22 percent to close at 2,898.05 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.54 percent higher at 11,074.59 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 581.43 billion yuan (about 82.04 billion U.S. dollars), contracting from 599.35 billion yuan seen in the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 759 to 628 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,146 to 912 in Shenzhen.

Shares related to liquor and dairy saw a strong performance, with New Hope Dairy Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end the day at 14.6 yuan per share.

Bucking the upward trend, companies in the sectors of cultivation and electronic sports led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.78 percent to close at 2,140.68 points Wednesday.
