Chinese shares close lower Monday

BEIJING, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower across the board Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 3.11 percent, at 2,660.17 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 4.52 percent lower at 9,691.53 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 687.41 billion yuan (about 96.9 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 717.04 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,362 to 123 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,994 to 192 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the sectors of electronics and computer application services led the losses, with shares of Sanan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. plunging by 8.58 percent to 21.73 yuan per share.

The leading artificial intelligence developer Iflytek Co., Ltd. saw its share price slip by 4.11 percent to finish at 34.74 yuan apiece.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 4.6 percent to close at 1,827.05 points.
