Ye Shexia, 52, got polio when she was less than a year old; she can only crawl on the ground with two small wooden paddles. Her husband, Dong Sanlong, 67, suffers from vitiligo and was never able to get good treatment because of a lack of money. The family lives in Chengzugou Village in Yichuan County, Henan Province.

Ye's husband is too old and sick to handle heavy loads and the whole family depends on a few mu of land to make a living. Sometimes, they have to rely on Ye's relatives. This year, they had to harvest 2000 kilograms of red potatoes. Dong can only pull a cart to the town occasionally, making it very hard for them to sell the potatoes.

The local volunteer organization heard about the story and on November 6 they gathered more than 20 volunteers to help Ye's family pack the potatoes. The market price of sweet potato is about thirty cents per catty. Hoping to help Ye and her family, Jin from Yichuan County decided to buy all the potatoes at a price of one yuan per catty.

According to Jin's driver, Jin took the sweet potatoes to a cellophane noodle factory and exchanged them for cellophane noodles at about 30 cents per catty. Jin was very happy although he lost a couple thousand yuan.

On Nov 7, Dong Xiaoli, president of the Yichuan Volunteers Association, gave the 4500 yuan earned from selling potatoes to Ye Shexia.
