Chinese yuan strengthens in January: index

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese yuan strengthened against a basket of currencies in January, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System (CFETS).

The CFETS yuan exchange rate composite index, which measures the yuan's strength relative to a basket of currencies, came in at 93.03 on Jan. 23, the last trading day of January, up 1.79 percent from the end of December.

This also marked an increase of 0.13 points from the previous week, according to CFETS.

The index compares the yuan to the value of 24 currencies, including the U.S. dollar, euro and Japanese yen.

An index that measures the yuan against the Bank for International Settlements currency basket climbed 1.71 percent from the end of December to 96.72 on Jan. 23, while that measuring the yuan against the Special Drawing Rights basket rose 1.7 percent to 93.37 during the period, the CFETS said.
