The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday reiterated that closing and taking over the US consulate in Chengdu is necessary to hit back at the US provocation. 

The statement came hours after Chinese authorities took over the US mission in Chengdu, marking the official close of the consulate in Southwest China.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin again protested the shutdown of its consulate in Houston and a break-in by US State Department officials into the consulate. 

Wang urged the US to rescind the erroneous actions and create ways to bring China-US ties back on track.
