The derailment of a Taiwan train has killed 18, and injured 187 at 5 am (local time) on Monday. Two tourists from Chinese mainland were among the injured, with a 44-year-old female passenger surnamed Yao severely injured, according to authorities.

Taiwan’s railway administration earlier said the death toll has rose to 22 but it revised back to 18, citing miscalculations and errors.

The Puyuma Express No. 6432 bound for Taitung from Shulin Station with 366 passengers on board derailed at 4:50 p.m. local time at Su'aoxin Station in Yilan County. All eight carriages of the train, which carried 366 passengers, derailed and four flipped on their side.

Taiwan’s railway administration confirmed that one of the injured is a US citizen and the rest are mostly from the island. This is the worst accident in Taiwan’s railway system in 37 years.

The driver was among those who suffer serious injuries and local authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Puyuma Express was commissioned in 2012 and is the fastest railway service offered by Taiwan’s railway system.
