Zhou Ning, an associate chief physician in Wuhan Tongji Hospital, and Enrico, a cardiologist from Niguarda Hospital in Milan, Italy, 9,000 kilometers away, had a 45-minute conversation via video chat.

Enrico asked Zhou what kind of protection suit and mask should be worn during treatment. At present, Niguarda Hospital has used a whole building for the treatment of the COVID-19 patients.

Despite an unstable signal, their meeting ended successfully. After this conversation, the doctors decided to arrange more video conferences.

“It is necessary to have communication between doctors and hospitals. As frontline doctors fighting the epidemic, we have learned a lot of lessons. I think we have the obligation to share them with the international community,” Zhou said.

Zhou, who was unfortunately infected with the novel coronavirus until a few days ago, returned to the frontline immediately after his recovery. In the video conference, he also shared his experience on the prevention of community transmission, the treatment of severely-infected patients and the protection of medical staff themselves.

“More than 2,000 medical staff were infected here, and a lot of them have lost their lives. We have drawn so many lessons, including how to protect ourselves, and how to wear the protection suits, goggles and face masks. Our experience should be passed on to our peers abroad, reducing their odds of being infected,” he said.
