East China's Fujian Province's coastal tourism city Xiamen partially sealed off two districts and one local hospital on early Monday as two positive COVID-19 patients were detected, one of whom is linked to infections in Putian where 64 positive cases have been reported since Friday.
The Global Times found that local residents and people who are about to travel to Xiamen are clearly rattled over the two positive cases as two national holidays approach in a few days. Xiamen received more than 2.71 million visitors during the Mid-Autumn Festival and the October 1 National Day holidays in 2020.
Xiamen's Tongan district and Siming district respectively imposed lockdowns of four streets and at least five streets in one community on early Monday. Residents living within the areas must stay indoors.
The one COVID-19 patient surnamed Wu who was a close contact of a patient from Putian was found in Xiamen's Tongan district, making Xiamen the second city linked to the Putian clustered outbreak after Quanzhou. Putian, about 170 kilometers away from Xiamen is a well-known "shoe city."
At the same time, one infection from the Siming district's First Hospital affiliated with Xiamen University was reported on Sunday. The COVID-19 infection was a logistics support staff member working at the hospital. The hospital has now closed its onsite emergence and outpatient services.
Siming district is home to many tourist attractions including Gulangyu island.
