China's top political advisory body to open annual session Sunday

The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body, will open its annual session at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Beijing.

Over 2,000 members of the CPPCC National Committee from across the country will discuss major political, economic and social issues concerning the country's development during this year's session scheduled to conclude on March 13.

Political advisors will hear and deliberate a report on the work of the Standing Committee of the 13th CPPCC National Committee, and a report on how the Standing Committee has handled proposals from CPPCC National Committee members since the previous session. (Xinhua)

Number of online music users in China hits 576 mln

The number of Chinese online music users hit 576 million as of December 2018, accounting for 69.5 percent of the country's total online population, according to a report on China's Internet development.

Close to 553 million enjoyed online music through mobile phones, up eight percent from the previous year, said the report released by the China Internet Network Information Center.

Citing the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the report said 96 percent of Chinese music consumers listened to licensed music, far higher than the global average of 62 percent. (Xinhua)

Top DPRK leader concludes official visit to Vietnam

Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un boarded a train back to Pyongyang on Saturday, wrapping up his official visit to the Southeast Asian nation, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Kim held the second summit with US President Donald Trump in Hanoi on Wednesday and Thursday, which ended without a deal.

During his official visit to Vietnam, Kim held talks with the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Vietnam Central Committee and President Nguyen Phu Trong and met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Vietnamese top legislator Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, respectively. (Xinhua)

Russia to respond to US moves on space militarization

Russia will have to take reciprocal and asymmetrical measures in response to possible threats brought by intentions of the United States to use outer space for military purposes, Russian Armed Forces General Staff Valery Gerasimov said Saturday.

The US intentions to use space for military purposes, in particular, the decision to form a Space Force, create prerequisites for the militarization of outer space, he said.

In addition, Gerasimov said that the destruction of agreements on arms control leads to "erosion of strategic stability.” (Xinhua)

Planes hit birds 280 times in 2018 at US Salt Lake airport

Planes at Salt Lake City International Airport in the US collided with 280 birds last year, including one incident where a flock of birds hit a plane carrying 223 passengers and narrowly missed hitting the engine.

Most of the bird strikes were minor, but in total they caused about $675,000 in damage, said airport wildlife manager Candace Deavila.

Now, airport officials must decide how to handle a new proposal by the Federal Aviation Administration that would require airports to do everything possible to keep all wildlife 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the airport boundaries. (AP)

'Elixir of immortality' found in central China's ancient tomb

Archaeologists in Central China's Henan Province said Friday that the liquid found in a bronze pot unearthed from a Western Han Dynasty (202 BC-8 AD) tomb is an "elixir of life" recorded in ancient Taoist literature.

About 3.5 liters of the liquid was excavated from the tomb of a noble family in the city of Luoyang last October.

Lab research found that the liquid is mainly made up of potassium nitrate and alunite, the main ingredients of an immortality medicine mentioned in an ancient Taoist text.

"It is the first time that mythical 'immortality medicines' have been found in China," said Shi Jiazhen, head of the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in Luoyang. (CGTN)

Wu Lei first Chinese player to score in Spain's LaLiga

Wu Lei made history on Saturday when he became the first Chinese player to score a goal in LaLiga.

The forward, who joined Liga Santander club, Espanyol in January, scored Espanyol's third goal in the 65th minute of the game in a 3-1 win at home to Valladolid, which lifts the Barcelona based club to 11th place on the league table, with 33 points from 26 games, to give them a comfortable cushion over the relegation zone.
