Xi joins deliberation with Fujian deputies at annual legislative session


President Xi Jinping on Sunday afternoon joined deliberation with deputies from Fujian Province at the second session of the 13th National People's Congress, China's national legislature.

"[We] should create a favorable development environment for innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity," said Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission. 

China should seek momentum from reform and opening up, unleash to the maximum the whole society's power for innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity, and keep improving the country's influence and competitiveness in a world that is undergoing profound changes, Xi said.

Fujian must leverage the combined strengths of the special economic zone, pilot free trade zone, comprehensive experimental zone and the core zone of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and keep exploring new approaches, Xi said. (Xinhua)

China urges comprehensive investigation into Ethiopian plane crash: FM spokesperson


China has called on Ethiopia to conduct a thorough investigation into the Ethiopian Airlines (ET) crash in a timely manner and inform the Chinese side as soon as possible, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said Sunday. 

The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia will continue to follow the incident and provide assistance to the families of the Chinese nationals who perished in the crash, Lu said.

The Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737- 800 MAX crashed near Bishoftu on Sunday, killing all 149 passengers and eight crewmembers. 

Eight Chinese nationals including one Hong Kong resident were on board. 

Ethiopia's state broadcaster says the passengers included 33 nationalities.

The cause of the crash of the new Boeing 737- 800 MAX plane was not immediately known. (People's Daily app)

China to develop a quantum satellite to provide 24h-service


China plans to develop a medium-high-earth-orbit quantum communication satellite able to provide services around the clock in the next few years, Pan Jianwei, a member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), told CGTN at a press conference for the second session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee on Sunday.

The quantum satellite is designed to establish "hack-proof" communications between parties by transmitting un-crackable keys from space to ground stations.

Pan stressed that quantum technology is very crucial for future technology, especially with information transmission. (CGTN)

Trump expected to seek $8.6B for border wall in new budget


US President Donald Trump will seek $8.6 billion dollars in his new budget to build the US-Mexico border wall, an administration official said Sunday, setting up another showdown with Congress, which has resisted giving him more money for his signature campaign promise.

The official confirmed the request was part of Trump’s spending blueprint for the 2020 budget year. 

The official was not authorized to discuss the budget details before Monday’s release of the plan and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Budget proposals are merely a starting point in negotiations, but Democrats immediately rejected the border request. (AP)

Baidu CEO wants ethics research in AI strengthened


Baidu CEO and national political advisor Robin Li has called for government-led top-level design and research into the ethical issues concerning artificial intelligence (AI)

China is an international leader in AI research and application, yet the discussion on related ethical issues has just started, and a broad consensus has yet to be reached, Li said.

Li called for intensified research to identify the ethical principles in AI development, strengthen the responsibilities of leading enterprises in the business sector to accelerate the implementation of principles, and enhance international exchanges to achieve a consensus. (Xinhua)

China conducts national survey on prevalence of mental disorders


A national epidemiological survey report on the prevalence of mental disorders among Chinese adults was published in the latest issue of the international journal The Lancet Psychiatry.

The report found that the prevalence of seven mental disorders including mood and anxiety disorders between 2013 and 2015 was over 1 percent higher than in 1982.

The research, supported by government authorities, involves 43 Chinese psychiatric hospitals and research institutes. (Xinhua)

‘Captain Marvel’ rockets to a record-breaking $153 million debut


“Captain Marvel,” Marvel Studios’ first female-fronted superhero movie, launched with an estimated $153 million domestically and $455 million globally.

The result came in at the high end of expectations for “Captain Marvel,” and ranks as one of Marvel’s most successful character debuts. Only “The Avengers” movies, “Black Panther,” ″Captain America: Civil War” and “Iron Man 3” have opened better in the Marvel cinematic universe. (AP)
