Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Monday warned the US that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces would not stand by if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits China's Taiwan during her trip to Asia.

"We have repeatedly made clear our firm opposition to Nancy Pelosi's potential visit to Taiwan. If the US side insists on visiting, it will be met with serious consequences arising thereof," said Zhao at a routine press briefing.

"We would like to remind the US, once again, that China is ready to take action and the PLA forces would not idly stand by," he said. "If the US side insists on doing otherwise, China will take strong and firm countermeasures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Zhao said that the US side should strictly adhere to the one-China principle and the stipulations in the three China-US joint communiques, follow through on US President Biden's commitment of not supporting "Taiwan independence," and cancel the visit to Taiwan.
