Arzhai Rock Cave, located in Ordos City, China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is the largest group of rock caves in China’s grassland areas, combining different forms of Buddhist art, such as temples, rock caves, cliffside carvings, murals, and sculptures.
The cave features 65 rock caves and 22 pagoda reliefs, and 14 of 41 well-preserved caves have murals depicting yurts, horsemanship and archery, hunting, and funerals. It’s known as the “Dunhuang in Grassland”.
With help from the Dunhuang Academy, the local government has been protecting murals in the cave since 2018. Ten caves with murals there have been restored so far.
