A Japanese diplomat from the Japanese Embassy in China was investigated by Chinas relevant departments for engaging in activities inconsistent with the identity of a diplomat in China, the Chinese Embassy in Japan said on Wednesday in response to Japans representation to China over the case.

The investigation was conducted in accordance with laws and regulations, and the legal rights of the diplomat have been protected, the embassy said.

China rejected so-called representations brought up by Japan. Japan should respect Chinas laws, strictly restrain words and deeds of diplomatic personnel stationed in China, and refrain from engaging in activities inconsistent with their identities, the embassy noted.

Media reported previously said that the Japanese diplomat was investigated on February 21, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan lodged representations to the Chinese Embassy in Japan.
