China is highly concerned about the current situation in the Middle East and the further deterioration of Gulf tensions is not in the interest of any party, said Geng Shuang, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Tuesday.

Peace and stability in the Middle East are of vital importance to the world, Geng pointed out in response to the latest decision by Iran's parliament to consider the Pentagon a "terrorist organization."

China always proposes that all parties must follow the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations, said Geng, adding that the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, and that peace and stability in the Middle East should be maintained.

Geng stressed that China is urging the US not to abuse force, but instead seek solutions through dialogue. “We call on all parties concerned to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and return to consultation as soon as possible to de-escalate tensions,” said Geng.
