China's tax, fee cuts total over 906 bln yuan in Jan.-April

China's top tax watchdog said the country's tax and fee cuts totaled 906.6 billion yuan in the first four months.

Of the total, the preferential tax and fee measures unveiled in 2020 to support economic development and the containment of the COVID-19 epidemic saved a total of 485.7 billion yuan, according to the State Taxation Administration.

The remaining 420.9 billion yuan of taxes and fees were reduced as a result of the implementation of a larger scale of tax and fee cut policies rolled out last year. (Xinhua)

EU urges Trump to rethink cutting funding to WHO

The European Union on Saturday urged President Donald Trump to rethink his decision to terminate the US relationship with the World Health Organization as spiking infection rates in India and elsewhere reinforced that the pandemic is far from contained.

The US is the largest source of financial support for the WHO, and its exit is expected to significantly weaken the organization.

“The WHO needs to continue being able to lead the international response to pandemics, current and future,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. (AP)

Some 200 arrested in violent protests in NYC over death of George Floyd

Protests over Minnesota black man George Floyd's death turned violent in New York City Friday night, with around 200 protesters arrested, local media said.

In the borough of Brooklyn, people clashed with officers and a police van was set on fire while other vans were vandalized. In another location, protesters threw water bottles at police, according to videos circulating online.

Some 200 arrests were made, mostly on minor charges. Some officers were injured, The New York Times reported. (Xinhua)

NASA, SpaceX launch astronauts to space

A spaceship designed and built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company has lifted off with two Americans on a history-making flight to the International Space Station.

The spacecraft took off Saturday afternoon from the same launch pad at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The flight ushers in a new era in commercial space travel and marks the first time NASA has launched astronauts from US soil in nearly a decade.

Ever since the space shuttle was retired in 2011, NASA has relied on Russian rockets launched from Kazakhstan to take US astronauts to and from the space station. (AP)

Sports events in England allowed to resume from Monday

Sports events will be allowed to resume in England from Monday without any spectators, providing they comply with the government’s coronavirus protocols.

The guidance for elite sports bodies was published by the government on Saturday as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions that were imposed in March are eased further.

It paves the way for the planned June 17 return of the Premier League, the world’s richest soccer competition. (AP)

Florida officials approve Walt Disney World reopening plans

Florida officials have approved plans for a phased reopening of Walt Disney World in Orlando starting July 11, according to a memo from a state agency released on Friday.

The state also cleared Sea World to reopen on June 10, said Halsey Beshears, secretary of Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

When the Disney parks reopen, guests and employees will be required to wear masks and have temperature checks. The resort will suspend parades, fireworks displays and other activities that create crowds. (CGTN)

8,000-year-old shell mound relic unearthed in east China

Archaeologists in east China's Zhejiang Province said Saturday they have discovered a prehistoric shell mound of 8,000 years old at the site of Jingtoushan ruins in the province.

Tests by the carbon-14 lab of Peking University concluded that the site was between 7,800 and 8,300 years old -- 1,000 years earlier than the city's Hemudu culture ruins, which are believed to be the origin of humanity in Ningbo. (Xinhua)
