BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.98 percent, at 3,562.31 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.09 percent lower at 14,393.51 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.08 trillion yuan (about 168.6 billion U.S. dollars), almost flat with the figure of the previous trading day.

Stocks in the electricity and fluorine chemical sectors led the gains, while those related to coal and beverage manufacturing were among the biggest losers.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.56 percent to close at 3,308.96 points.
