Creating a micro-landscape cake is an art that combines culinary skills and artistic talent in landscape design. It ingeniously depicts natural scenery and opens up a pathway toward sweetness, allowing each bite a cheerful journey.

In China, this edible art is shining in the hands of a 1990s-born baker.

Career shift

"I used to work as a graphic designer, spending my days rushing from one task to another, with little time left for the things I truly enjoyed," said Mo Yong, a cake artist who lives in Nanning, the capital city of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

In 2019, stumbling across the micro-landscape cakes on social media, Mo was instantly captivated and quickly mastered the techniques for making them.

"I made a birthday cake for a friend using what I'd learned," she noted. "Never before did I feel such a sense of fulfillment and achievement like this after seeing their surprised expression. And that is why I decided to follow the true calling of my heart and switch to this 'sweet journey'."

Other creations include the tranquil Weizhou Island in the Beibu Gulf, the graceful sun setting over the Yong River in Nanning, and the mighty Detian Waterfalls in Chongzuo.

She said that, unlike ordinary cakes, these are edible tributes to the landmark scenic views of Guangxi. Each was finely crafted in a way that marries the natural splendor with her deep affection for her native land.

Before crafting, Mo meticulously draws a design draft based on the actual scene, then miniaturizes it to the cake's scale and redesigns it.

Then, she embarks on a creative journey of re-envisioning and adorning the cake with ingredients including chocolate, buttercream, cookie crumbs, and fruit and vegetable powders to bring the full landscape elements such as rivers, lakes and rocks to life.

"When it comes down to the cake - 'Green Mountains and Lucid Waters', I typically use the trimmed cake base and whipped cream to form a mountain range, and then sprinkle some matcha powder to give it a grassy touch, with small matcha-flavored cake bases serving as trees, dotting the peaks or the base of the mountains," she said with eyes glowing with joys and pride. "All of these allow this cool, fresh green vibe to go on and on."

Flourishing vigor and vitality

Mo's creations are not confined to beautiful scenery but actually zero in on little vibrant stories.

A 10th wedding anniversary cake for a couple is an impressive example. It served as a carrier of the special moments they spent together.

To fully demonstrate this decade-long journey on a cake was a challenging task. "I made a cake modeled after the map of China, with its edges adorned with chocolate and 43 scenic spots placed on the top, symbolizing the shared travels of the couple over the past 10 years," Mo recalled. "They were quite moved at the sight of it."

Mo's passion for baking allows her works a combination of both aesthetic and humanistic values. They breathe in new life and reemerge as a part of a larger picture.
