China on Wednesday called on the European Union (EU) to create a fair, non-discriminatory, transparent, and predictable market environment for Chinese firms and reiterated that the essence of China-EU economic and trade relations lies in mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Jiakun made the remarks during a regular press briefing in Beijing in response to a question about recent comments by French President Emmanuel Macron on economic and trade relations between China and the EU. Macron, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, reportedly stated that "China is welcome" and called for increased Chinese direct investment in Europe.

"The essence of China-EU economic and trade relations is complementary advantages and win-win cooperation," Guo said.

The spokesperson highlighted that China's product competitiveness arises from "substantial investment in scientific research, full market competition, and a complete industrial supply chain," rather than government subsidies.

He emphasized that China does not deliberately seek trade surpluses and is prepared to serve not only as the "world's factory" but also as the "world's market."

The spokesperson expressed the hope that the EU would adopt a long-term perspective and an open attitude, meet China halfway, and work together to ensure the steady and healthy growth of bilateral economic ties.

"China's government has consistently encouraged and supported capable and willing Chinese companies to invest and do business in Europe in line with market principles," Guo added.

"We hope that the EU can create a fair, non-discriminatory, transparent, and predictable market environment for Chinese firms."
