China said on Monday that building a new type of strategic partnership with Canada is conducive to world peace, stability, development and prosperity.
The remarks follow recent warnings from US President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the US will impose 100 percent tariffs on Canadian imports should Ottawa finalize a new trade deal with China.
"China advocates handling state-to-state relations through win-win cooperation rather than a zero-sum mentality or confrontation," Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a routine press briefing in Beijing.
"The new partnership includes specific arrangements to properly address economic and trade issues between the two nations."
The efforts, Guo said, embodied the spirit of equality, inclusiveness and mutual benefit.
"This partnership does not target any third party," Guo said. "It aligns with the fundamental interests of both peoples while contributing to global peace, stability, development and prosperity."
