China on Tuesday urged Japan to immediately stop "manipulation and reckless moves" concerning the Taiwan question and to strictly abide by its political commitments.
Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks at a routine press briefing in response to reports regarding Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent comments. Takaichi on Monday said that in the event of a contingency in the Taiwan Strait, the US and Japan might take coordinated action to evacuate their citizens, adding that Japan would not abandon its allies.
Guo described Japan's rhetoric as "self-contradictory," noting that while Tokyo claims to act within the scope of law, it has continued its gross interference in China's domestic affairs and even threatened the use of force against China.
"Japan colonized Taiwan for more than 50 years, committing innumerable crimes and bearing serious historical responsibility to the Chinese people," Guo said. He emphasized that Japan has no standing to make irresponsible remarks on Taiwan from either a historical or legal perspective.
The spokesperson further warned that such remarks expose the ambitions of Japanese right-wing forces to provoke antagonism, make trouble, and take the opportunity to keep remilitarizing Japan and to challenge the post-war international order. He added that these actions pose a severe threat to regional peace and the political foundation of China-Japan relations. The international community must stay on high alert and firmly reject these threats.
"We once again urge the Japanese side to abide by the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan and Japan's own political commitments made to China, do soul-searching, correct its wrongdoings, and stop their manipulation and reckless moves on the Taiwan question," Guo said.
