China supports Venezuela in safeguarding its sovereignty, dignity and legitimate rights, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks during a regular press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

Lin Jian noted that the US blatantly launched military strikes against Venezuela and forcibly seized President Nicolas Maduro and his wife about a month ago.

"The hegemonic act seriously violated international law and infringed upon Venezuela's sovereignty, jeopardizing peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean," Lin said, adding that China firmly opposes such actions.

Lin said China will work with the international community to resolutely uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, as well as the fundamental principles of international justice and fairness.
