Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular press conference in Beijing in response to recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding constitutional revision to explicitly recognize the country's Self-Defense Forces.
During World War II, Japanese militarism brought profound suffering to the region and the world, said Lin.
"Documents with international legal effect, such as the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Declaration, and the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, clearly defined Japan's international obligations as a defeated nation," said Lin. "These also serve as the political and legal prerequisites for Japan's return to the international community."
"For this reason, Japan's constitutional revision issue has always received high attention from the international community and its Asian neighbors," Lin added.
The spokesperson called on Japan to deeply reflect on its history of aggression, heed the voices of its people calling for peace and opposing war, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and take concrete actions to win the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community.
