A senior Chinese diplomat said on Tuesday that China hopes the international community will help create favorable conditions for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis and will continue to work actively toward that goal.
Teng Fei, counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, made the remarks in an explanatory statement after the UN General Assembly's vote on the draft resolution titled "Support for lasting peace in Ukraine."
Tuesday marks four years since the beginning of the ongoing Ukraine crisis. Teng said at this critical juncture, China hopes the UN General Assembly will play a constructive role in building a peace consensus among member states.
The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution with 107 in favor, 12 against and 51 abstentions.
Teng explained China's decision to abstain from the vote, saying that it reflects China's consistent principles and stance on the Ukraine issue.
China has always believed that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected, the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter should be upheld, and the legitimate security concerns of all parties should be addressed, said the Chinese envoy, adding that all efforts that are conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis should be supported.
Noting the Ukraine issue has now entered a critical phase for negotiations, with intensive dialogues and contacts, particularly focusing on the substantive issues of the crisis, Teng said China encourages and supports all efforts for peace, urging all relevant parties to maintain a positive momentum, continue building consensus, and strive for a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement.
He added the root causes of the Ukraine issue must be addressed to establish a more balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture, ensuring long-term peace and stability in Europe.
