China supports the Iranian government and people in safeguarding national stability and their legitimate rights and interests, and hopes that all parties will cherish peace, exercise restraint, and resolve differences through dialogue.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning made these remarks on Thursday when asked to comment on the heightened tension between the US and Iran.

China is closely following the developments of the situation in Iran, and opposes the threat or use of force in international relations, Mao emphasized.

"The people of China and Iran share a traditional friendship," Mao added. "China is willing to continue to play its role as a responsible major country in this regard."
