China's research and development (R&D) expenditure rose to 3.93 trillion yuan (about $551 billion) in 2025, marking an 8.1 percent year-on-year increase, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China. R&D intensity – measured as the share of spending in GDP – reached 2.8 percent, continuing a steady rise over the past five years.
