China opposes the US using so-called "overcapacity" as a pretext for political manipulation, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Thursday.

Guo made the remarks at a regular press briefing when asked about the US administration's reportedly planned investigations into alleged excess industrial capacity involving 16 major trading partners, including China.

He said China's position on handling China-US economic and trade issues has been consistent and clear, stressing that China opposes unilateral tariff measures in any form.

Tariff wars and trade wars serve no one's interests, he said, adding that the two sides should resolve relevant issues through consultation on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.

So-called "overcapacity" is a false proposition, Guo noted, adding that China opposes using it as a pretext for political manipulation.
