China on Monday called on Afghanistan and Pakistan to remain calm and restrained, establish face-to-face communication and reach a ceasefire as soon as possible, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.

"Afghanistan and Pakistan are neighbors that cannot be moved apart and some bilateral issues can be solved only through dialogue and consultation," Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian said at a routine press conference in Beijing.

Lin noted that China has been mediating through its own channels and is willing to continue to make contributions to the reconciliation and ease of relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
