Snow leopards are quietly thriving in northwest China. A recent survey estimates that about 205 snow leopards live in and around the Tomur Peak National Nature Reserve, including roughly 130 individuals within the reserve itself.
The year-long study began in April 2025, with 312 infrared camera traps deployed across the mountains. Researchers identified 109 individual snow leopards and recorded 17 family groups, including mothers with cubs and adult pairs.
The project marks the first systematic survey revealing the status of snow leopards and their habitats in the area. Scientists also fitted satellite collars on snow leopards in the Tianshan Mountains for the first time, helping track their movements and better understand their home ranges.
