Cheng Li-wun's visit to the Chinese mainland aligns with mainstream public opinion in Taiwan, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday.

Zhu made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a question about online polling on the trip of Cheng, the chairwoman of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party. According to the poll, 60% of respondents believe the visit will have a positive impact on this year's elections in Kuomintang-governed counties and cities.

Cheng, leading a KMT delegation, arrived in Shanghai by plane on Tuesday. She paid homage to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province on Wednesday morning.

The visit, which covers Jiangsu, Shanghai and Beijing, will run through Sunday.

Zhu said the visit is based on the shared political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," and helps promote dialogue and exchanges.

"The visit aligns with the mainstream public sentiment in Taiwan, which favors peace, development, communication and cooperation," Zhu said, adding the visit is winning recognition and support from the public of Taiwan.
