China on Monday called on all relevant parties to remain calm and exercise restraint after US President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to block the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump announced on Sunday that the US Navy would begin blocking ships trying to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz, after peace talks with Iran failed to produce a deal.

"The Strait of Hormuz is an important international corridor for goods and energy trade," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told a regular press briefing. "Maintaining security, stability and smooth passage in the region serves the common interests of the international community."

Guo said the root cause of blocked passage through the strait lies in the war against Iran, and the way out is to achieve a ceasefire and end hostilities as soon as possible.

"All parties should remain calm and exercise restraint," said Guo. "China is ready to continue playing a positive and constructive role."
