A 6-year-old boy trapped in a narrow crevice between the rocks just half a meter above a river was rescued before the tide rose at the Paotai Mountain in Longwan, East China's Zhejiang Province.
On the evening of May 1 during the May Day holiday, the boy, who was visiting Paotai Mountain with his parents, accidentally lost his footing and slipped more than 20 meters down a steep cliff when his parents were taking photos, as the Oujiang River below was at high tide, according to the statement by Longwan public security bureau on Saturday.
A search-and-rescue team of more than 30 police officers and emergency personnel were quickly assembled after his parents called police. Following a coordinated ground and aerial search, the boy was located and transferred onto a rescue boat and safely returned to shore as the tide continued to rise.
After examination, the boy was found to have suffered shock and minor abrasions, with no serious injuries, the police said.
Local authorities reminded parents to keep a close watch on children while traveling during the May Day holiday and to keep distance from hazardous areas such as cliffs and riverbanks.
On Sunday, the Office of the State Council Work Safety Committee urged stronger safety precautions at tourist attractions across China, to enhance safety measures during the May Day holiday and step up both overt inspections and unannounced spot checks.
