Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory; it has never been a country, and will never be one in the future, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said in Beijing.

Guo made the remarks during a routine press conference on Monday, in response to US President Donald Trump's latest remarks on Taiwan.

"'Taiwan independence' and peace across the Taiwan Strait are incompatible. Trying to achieve 'Taiwan independence' by seeking foreign support will surely end in failure, while reunification is the only bright path forward," Guo said.

"The DPP authorities should recognize this trend and stop pursuing the wrong course at once."
