Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks during a routine press briefing in Beijing in response to a media inquiry about reports that the European Commission was expected to introduce measures protecting European industries against so-called competition from China.
"The essence of China-EU economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win cooperation," Mao said. "China has never deliberately pursued a trade surplus with Europe."
Protectionism would only harm the interests of European consumers and undermine the competitiveness of European industries, she said.
"We hope the European side will view China-EU economic and trade relations in a comprehensive and objective manner," Mao said. "We are also closely following relevant developments and will take necessary measures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests."
