Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a routine press briefing in response to reports that the two sides signed the memorandum.

"The signing of the phase-one memorandum is of positive significance for easing tensions and consolidating the momentum of the ceasefire," he said. "China hopes that all relevant parties, including the US and Iran, will uphold the spirit of honoring agreements and earnestly fulfill their commitments."

Force cannot solve problems and equal-footed negotiations are the right way forward, Lin said.

"China hopes that the US and Iran will approach the second phase of negotiations with a rational and pragmatic attitude, meet each other halfway and work together for positive outcomes in the next stage of talks."
