China has expressed readiness to provide assistance after Venezuela was rocked by two powerful back-to-back earthquakes, both over magnitude 7, causing buildings to collapse across capital Caracas and other areas.

At a Thursday press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China extends its sincere condolences to the government and people of Venezuela, and expressed confidence that the country will overcome the crisis and rebuild under the government's leadership.

China is ready to do what it can to assist in light of Venezuela's needs, Guo said.

China is closely monitoring developments and remains in close contact with its embassy in Venezuela, he said, adding that there have been no reports of Chinese casualties so far.
