BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- China commends the new government of the Solomon Islands for reiterating its firm commitment to the one-China principle, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Friday, adding that this will solidify the bilateral political foundation and provide the necessary conditions for deeper cooperation.

According to a press release from the Office of the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Prime Minister Matthew Wale stated on Wednesday in his address to the National Parliament that the relationship between the Solomon Islands and China is vital to the country's development, and reaffirmed that the government will stay committed to the one-China principle.

When asked to comment, spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that there is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. "The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This is the prevailing consensus in the international community," he said.

China stands ready to work with the Solomon Islands to continue deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development for a new era, and make new progress in building a China-Solomon Islands community with a shared future in the new era, Lin added.
