Sanctions and pressure do not help solve problems; they only intensify tensions and escalate the situation, which is not in the interest of any party, Lin Jian, spokesperson from China's Foreign Ministry told a press conference on Monday.

Lin's remarks were in response to a question asking how China would respond if the US were to implement such secondary sanctions as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has threatened to impose secondary sanctions on countries that trade with Iran, and China is a major buyer of Iranian oil.

China calls on all parties to remain rational and restrained, avoid taking measures that could further intensify conflicts and impact global economic development and financial stability, and return as soon as possible to the correct track of dialogue, negotiation, and political settlement, Lin said.

Lin noted that China will closely monitor relevant developments and take necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
