A catastrophic cascading hazard struck Gyirong Port in Xizang, beginning with an ice-rock avalanche and followed by a high-speed debris flow. Professor Fan Xuanmei, director of the State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection at Chengdu University of Technology, reconstructs the full sequence of the disaster using satellite imagery and seismic observation data, and analyzes why the event had such devastating impacts.
