An avalanche of ice and rock originating from a high-mountain glacier in Nepal has been identified as the cause of a devastating mudslide that struck Gyirong Port in Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region. The glacier, equivalent in size to more than 60 football fields, collapsed and struck Gyirong Port at the speed of a bullet train, said Su Pengcheng, a professor of engineering at Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on August 30.
