KABUL, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Afghan police have seized 143 kg of opium-type illegal drugs and taken six drug smugglers into custody in northern Afghanistan's Takhar province, spokesman for the provincial police office Naqibullah Masroor said Monday.

The alleged smugglers, according to the official, had placed the contraband into the cavities of a car and were attempting to transport it to an unknown destination.

However, police, based on an intelligence report, intercepted the car and recovered the narcotics on Saturday, the official added.
