NANJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 50 young scholars and experts from China, the United States and other countries gathered on Monday at a dialogue event in Nanjing City, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, aiming to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and practical China-U.S. cooperation amid evolving international environment.

The dialogue, themed "Reshaping the geoeconomic landscape: managing differences and advancing global development," centered around topics that included changes in globalization, industrial transformation and technology governance, China-U.S. strategic interactions, and regional order.

Yu Yunquan, vice president of China International Communications Group (CICG), told those gathered at the event that the China-U.S. relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world, and that people-to-people exchanges serve as the public foundation for it.

He expressed the hope that through this stable and predictable exchange mechanism, the intellectual communities of both countries could maintain channels of communication, continue to seek common ground amid differences and maintain reason in times of change.

The dialogue can contribute to enhancing mutual understanding between the Chinese and American peoples, strengthening non-governmental ties and promoting a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, Yu added.

Christopher Hobbs, deputy director of peace strategy and operations of the Carter Center peace program, stressed the need to continue people-to-people dialogues, as a means of bringing academics and policymakers together to constructively understand different perspectives and ultimately avoid unnecessary conflict.

"Our goal today must be to ensure that whatever our destiny, we have set ourselves on a positive trajectory," Hobbs said.

Scholars attending the dialogue noted that the global landscape is undergoing accelerated changes, and the China-U.S. relationship is growing more complicated. Global challenges such as climate change and artificial intelligence governance urgently require joint responses from all countries, especially China and the United States.

The event is the third edition of the youth dialogue on promoting China-U.S. people-to-people exchanges, a mechanism-based platform that aims to bring together young scholars and experts to engage in conversations based on their professional research. It was jointly launched by the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies under CICG and the Carter Center in 2024 and has been in operation since then.
