Chinese student Jiang Antong has been posthumously awarded a Commendation for Brave Conduct in Australia for attempting to rescue a fellow student in distress three years ago.

On October 29, 2023, Jiang, 28, was visiting Fairy Meadow Beach in New South Wales with friends when he suddenly heard cries for help. Without hesitation, he rushed to the aid of a fellow student who had encountered trouble while swimming and helped push the student toward safety, but was swept away by the waves.

Jiang arrived in Australia in July 2023 to pursue a master's degree at the University of Wollongong. He had been in Australia for just 112 days when the tragedy occurred.

His father described him as a kind-hearted young man who was always ready to help others. His father said that, knowing his son's kind and helpful nature, Jiang would have rushed to help without thinking of his own safety.

The University of Wollongong has erected a memorial stone on campus in Jiang's honor and planted a tree beside it. The university has also established a scholarship for Chinese students and holds an annual football match in his memory.

His family hopes the award will keep his courage as a Chinese international student in people's memories and serve as a reminder of the value of life.
