China releases 5-year development plan for electronic information manufacturing sector

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China recently issued a development plan for the electronic information manufacturing industry during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), aiming to make the sector play a pivotal role in the global industrial landscape.

According to the plan, jointly issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission, the electronic information manufacturing industry will further consolidate its prominent position within the industrial sector by 2030.

Industrial firms in the sector with an annual main business revenue of at least 20 million yuan (about 2.96 million U.S. dollars) are expected to see their combined revenue surpass 30 trillion yuan, and R&D investment intensity of the sector will rise to 3.5 percent, said the plan.

The electronic information manufacturing industry is a pillar of the national economy, according to the plan.

By 2025, China's electronic information manufacturing industry had led the country's 41 major industrial sectors in revenue for 13 consecutive years. And during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the output of core consumer electronics, including mobile phones and computers, also maintained a top global ranking.

The plan aims to seize opportunities in artificial intelligence development, accelerate innovation across the entire industrial chain, and strengthen the integrated application of new technologies and products, laying a solid foundation for building a manufacturing powerhouse and a cyber powerhouse.

By 2030, China aims to secure competitive strengths in technology and products in fields such as integrated circuits, advanced computing, consumer electronics, basic electronics and energy electronics, with the application penetration rate of new-generation intelligent terminals expected to rise significantly, according to the plan.

It also sets clear requirements for advancing full-chain breakthroughs in integrated circuits, accelerating innovation and application of consumer electronic products, and promoting the transition of the BeiDou navigation system from industry-specific applications to widespread public use.

Efforts will be made to advance the construction of optoelectronic integrated platforms, accelerate full-chain deployment of space computing, and develop highly secure autonomous driving control systems, said the plan.
