Ministry Minutes | China opposes unauthorized long-arm jurisdiction: foreign ministry

China on Thursday said it opposes long-arm jurisdiction that has no basis in international law and is not authorized by the UN Security Council.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a routine press briefing when asked about a Russia sanctions bill passed by the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, September 16.

The bill empowers US President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on buyers of Russian oil and gas, with China listed as a potential target.

Guo said China has always conducted normal economic and trade cooperation with all countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

"Such cooperation targets no third party and will not be disrupted or coerced by any third party," he said. "China consistently opposes long-arm jurisdiction lacking basis in international law and authorization from the UN Security Council."
