China urges Japan to stop any attempt at 'remilitarization': spokesperson

China urges Japan to deeply reflect on its history of aggression, heed the calls of regional countries and stop pursuing any attempt at "remilitarization," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Monday.

Guo made the remarks at a regular media briefing when asked about reports that the Russian Foreign Ministry had notified Japan over the U.S. deployment of the Typhon mid-range missile system in Kyushu, stressing that the deployment is unacceptable, urging Japan to fully recognize the outcomes of World War II and stop "remilitarization."

"The Typhon mid-range missile system is a strategic offensive weapon, and Japan's introduction of the system is yet another piece of evidence of its accelerated 'remilitarization,'" Guo said.

Guo said the move increases risks of military confrontation and an arms race, threatens strategic balance and regional stability, and undermines the legitimate security interests of neighboring countries.

The international community is highly vigilant after the move, and people in multiple Asian countries have voiced opposition to it, Guo said.

China has repeatedly lodged strong protests with Japan through diplomatic channels and recently sent a diplomatic note to the Japanese side to reiterate its solemn position, he added.
