China's modernization achievements to offer fresh opportunities for world development: VP

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Han Zheng said on Friday that China will offer fresh opportunities for world development with new achievements of Chinese modernization.

Han made the remarks while meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Han said that the current international situation is fraught with turmoil and the international system with the United Nations at its core is facing multiple challenges.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China at the UN. Over the past 55 years, China has always adhered to true multilateralism and supported the UN in playing a central role in international affairs, Han said.

Looking to the future, China will continue to play its role as a responsible major country and actively promote the alignment of its own concepts with the UN agenda, Han said.

Upholding multilateralism and improving the global governance system are the common calls of the international community, Han said, noting that the vast majority of member states, especially developing countries, have always had high expectations for the United Nations.

China stands ready to work with the United Nations to pool global efforts for sustainable development and advance the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

China will also support the United Nations in continuing to mobilize the international community to address major challenges such as climate change, actively advancing global governance in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, and will continue to support the Security Council in fulfilling its primary responsibility for maintaining world peace and security.

For his part, Guterres expressed gratitude to China for its long-term firm and strong support for the cause of the United Nations, saying that cooperation between the two sides has now reached a new level.

The world today is facing serious challenges, while multilateralism is encountering headwinds, Guterres said.

China has always been actively committed to promoting international cooperation, addressing common challenges, and upholding fairness and justice, playing a key role in advancing important UN agendas and making significant contributions to global development, he said.

Guterres said the United Nations stands ready to further deepen cooperation with China in an all-round way, reform and improve global governance, promote the building of a multi-polar world, and safeguard the common interests of the international community.
